Surrey Festival of Dance Celebrates It’s 52nd Annual With Over 6000 Dancers!
The Surrey Festival of Dance is not only one of the oldest dance competitions in the Nation but is also one of the largest in terms of participants and scholarships awarded. Those who founded the Festival Society over 51 years ago would never have realized that their passion for dance would create one of the largest dance festivals in North America.
The Festival took place from April 3rd to 28th, 2018 yet planning starts well in advance. Starting September 2017, festival organizers took to social media to announce the availability of their 2018 Syllabus which outlined the competition’s rules and regulations. Covering some 60 pages, the Syllabus notifies dancers and studios of the disciplines being judged for each dance discipline. From the entries, the Festival then produces a 250+ page, professionally printed Programme complete with advertising. SFD organizers apply a minimal charge for the book to partially pay for its production and helps fund the scholarships and bursaries.
The 2018 SFD secured ten professional dancers as Adjudicators from across North America, making this festival one of the most advanced and educational offerings to amateur BC dancers. After each competition, dancers were invited to participate in Masterclasses with the adjudicators, giving them invaluable insight into a professional’s perspective and leaving them with a new set of skills.
While the SFD 2018 attracted thousands of dancers and numerous studios this year, the Festival was also proud of the support it received from the local business community and the City of Surrey. Together, the studios, businesses and City booked 65 ads in the 2018 Programme.
With dancers ranging from 5 to 92, the SFD 2018 proudly awarded over $65,000 in scholarships and bursaries. This sum represents one of the largest purses of any dance competition in North America. In fact, over the past 25 years alone, the SFD has awarded $1.3 million in scholarships and bursaries! This impressive sum is largely reinvested back into the local economy supporting the continued growth of the dance industry in Surrey, Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, BC interior and Vancouver Island, the economic benefits are provincial wide.
Event Treasurer Carol Girardi is already gearing up for SFD 2019! Carol offers a “Special thanks to the participating studios, sponsors and advertisers, and of course, our talented dancers and dedicated volunteers.” Offering a teaser she concludes, “The festival dates for 2019 will be announced shortly. We anticipate great response to our addition of the new Junior Ballet Set Solos.”
