The SFD is pleased to announce the procurement of 15 highly respected and experienced instructors for this year’s Dance & Wellness Two Day Intensive seminars and workshops. Held at the Newton Cultural Centre October 15 & 16, this sell-out event takes place annually and has grown substantially each year.
Whether it is a new dance discipline, nutrition, acting skills or injury prevention – participants will learn techniques to elevate their abilities in the world of dance. The following is a brief look at what the instructors bring to the dance floor and how you can benefit from their knowledge and commitment to this moving art form.
Andrea Marino is an established entertainer and instructor. She stepped into her first pair of ballet slippers at the age of two, continued to train intensively in all styles of dance, then became an original member of The Source Dance Company in 2000. Her early love for musical theatre sparked an interest in singing. She started vocal lessons at age ten and booked her first role as Nancy in Bye Bye Birdie at Theatre Under the Stars shortly thereafter. Andrea also trained extensively in film and television acting with acclaimed coaches in Vancouver and New York. Select credits include stage productions Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding, West Side Story and The Candy Girl Cabaret; music videos for Hedley and Shania Twain; television series Masters of Horror and Life As We Know It; commercials for Burger King and Verizon Wireless; MTV’s movie Monster Island starring Carmen Electra.
Cristina Bucci is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and nutritionist whose career has taken her to places such as Brazil, Macau, China, Egypt, Israel, Taiwan, England and throughout Canada. While training in London, England she decided to pursue her passion for nutrition and upon returning to Vancouver she studied at Canadian School of Natural Nutrition where she attained the professional designation as Registered Holistic Nutritionist (R.H.N.) with honors.
Cara Lee’s desire to be on stage started directly after her first tap class. Dancing was her first love. That very love has grown tremendously over the years and has resulted in a creating a talented performer and entertainer, with a true passion for the arts. Cara Lee was one of two Canadians chosen from the very first Canada-wide auditions to perform at the famous Moulin Rouge in Paris, France. She was thrilled for the opportunity to be trained in the famous French Cancan and live in such a city of culture. She describes The Moulin Rouge as ‘an experience of a lifetime’.
Dale Adamson discovered Surrey International Folk Dancers (SIFD) in the year 2000, beginning her life-long love of dance. In 2003, She joined Burnaby Folk Dancers, and started learning their dances in order to teach them in Surrey.
Dr. Crysta Serné, a former National level gymnast, understands the mentality and desire of athletes to get back into action ASAP. With over fifteen years in her practice as a Chiropractor and Sports Therapist, she has treated and rehabilitated many athletes from a variety of different sports. She believes an integrated approach helps the athlete achieve optimal success.
Ellie King is an award winning theatre professional who was born and raised in England where she studied dance and drama, gaining qualifications from RAD, ISTD, BBO, LAMDA and the Poetry Society. She is a writer, actor, director, choreographer, set-designer, graphic artist and teacher.
Hardeep Sahota was born and raised in Punjab, India and was initiated into the dance form of Punjabi Folk Dances from a very young age. He quickly realized that he had a passion for the art form and spent a decade mastering the fundamental rhythms and movements. Hardeep has participated in Bhangra competitions and events across the globe and won many prestigious competitions. One of Hardeep’s greatest accomplishments is to become the first CTDA (Canadian Dance Teachers Association) Certified Bhangra Instructor.
Kyle Vicente is a multifaceted performer, choreographer & director. His humble beginnings started his dance career at the age of 13. Growing up in Vancouver, BC has exposed him to a lot of what the arts have to offer. He has trained in many forms of dance such as: Hip-Hop, Popping, Jazz, Locking, Contemporary, House & Dancehall to name a few.
Michael McInnes is an international dance teacher and choreographer, well known for his innovative choreography, and strong technical background. He has worked in many aspects of the dance industry including television such as being a dancer on ABC’s “Kyle XY” and commercials for the Sci-Fi channels “Eureka” and Virgin Mobiles “Random Acts of Love”. Industrials such as the “MARNA Convention”, “Envy My Music” and “Disco Fever” put on for Electronic Arts. Michael has also enjoyed working on cruise ships, he was a dancer for Royal Caribbean International, and a dance captain for Celebrity Cruise Lines.
Suzanne Oullette is originally from Vancouver and has trained / danced with some of the world’s finest ballet companies from Germany’s Stuttgart Ballet to Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She was Ballet Mistress for Ballet BC for 5 years and was’ the founding director of Ballet B.C.’s Mentor Program. She has worked as rehearsal director for John Alleyne, James Kudelka, Paul Taylor, Jean Grand Maitre, Reid Anderson, Anna Marie Holmes, Simone Orlando, Josh Beamish to name a few. She has also worked as a rehearsal director / teacher with Mascall Dance and MOVE the company.
Tosh Sutherland is a Vancouver based actor and dancer who has had the good fortune to take his career all over the world. After several years at sea, dancing with Princess Cruises he is excited to be back in beautiful British Columbia. Since his return he has had the pleasure of performing in many different shows including a new historical piece debuted at the Vancouver International Tap Dance Festival. He has taught all levels and ages throughout Canada and brings a sense of fun and play into his classes.
Vicky Wong was born in Hong Kong and moved to Canada with her family in 1990. She is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English. Vicky has always had a passion for Chinese tradition and culture, first learning the art of Chinese calligraphy and soon after, the art of Taichi.
Abbey Dutton A graduate of The Canadian College of Performing Arts and The Source Dance Company, Abbey has performed independently and commercially as a dancer, actor and singer on both stage and screen. She has been teaching for 10 years in numerous dance genres and loves to share her artistic passion in a safe, supportive environment with lots of laughter.
Lisa Rose Metz‘s diverse passion for Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and Hip Hop create the ground work for her career and unique artistry. Based in Vancouver BC, Lisa has vast experience ranging from dancing on TV and in music videos to performing on stage in New York and LA. Lisa has also had the pleasure of choreographing and directing her first full length contemporary show entitled Three. In recent years Lisa has been gaining much attention for her Choreography and is well recognized for her individuality and unique style.
Meredith Kalaman is a Contemporary Choreographer and Performer born and raised in Greater Vancouver. Meredith is known for her innovative vision and for creating thought provoking work. Through the education and sharing of contemporary dance, she supports people, particularly young girls to develop an empowered relationship to their bodies and to foster confidence in being fully self-expressed in the world. Meredith is also an Advocate for Artists and leads workshops for dancers to develop business and communication skills that leave them with the tools to have a thriving career in the arts.
